POPE TO USE SPANISH VISIT TO FURTHER DEFAME GAY PEOPLE

KENILWORTH, 7 JULY 2006 — The Pope will use his visit to Spain this weekend as another opportunity to slander gay people and their relationships, says the Gay and Lesbian Humanist Association (GALHA).

Under the guise of “defending the traditional family”, the Pope will launch another insulting attack on gay marriage, which has been legalised in Spain.

GALHA spokesperson George Broadhead said: “The Vatican’s obsession with gay marriage is damaging not only to gay people but to the Catholic Church itself. Latest figures show an accelerating decline in membership of the Church across Europe – and that includes Spain. The Pope’s continuous stream of hateful pronouncements about gays is driving decent people away. His attempts to sow discord among the people of Spain over this issue is deeply undemocratic. It is an attempt to undermine the popular and properly elected government of the country.”
