GALHA SUPPORTS AGE OF CONSENT CAMPAIGN

The Gay and Lesbian Humanist Association (GALHA) has made use of its Postal Action Scheme to lobby MPs prior to the votes in Parliament on the Age of Consent – Sexual Offences (Amendment) Bill. Members in many parts of the country who take part in the Scheme have written to their MPs on the issue. GALHA has also lobbied members of the Parliamentary Humanist Group in the House of Lords.

GALHA Secretary George Broadhead said: “Since our founding 20 years ago, we have played a part in the campaign for lesbian and gay rights and we recognise the vital importance of achieving an equal age of consent on the road to complete equality. We also recognise the importance of getting a large vote in the Commons, but think it unlikely that the Lords will do a volte-face on the issue – the stance taken by Baroness Young, and many other peers who support her, is based on religious beliefs and is clearly irreversible.”
