Landmark meeting will address “gay cure†controversy.
London 12th January 2011
The Gay and Lesbian Humanist Association (GALHA) has organised a public meeting to address the continual controversy over the repeated claims of evangelical religious and other groupings that homosexuality can be cured using “therapeutic techniquesâ€. The main speaker at the meeting, Dominic Davies of the organisation “Pink Therapy†will argue that there is no scientific evidence for this approach which has, he will claim has caused great damage to vulnerable members of the LGBT community. Mr Davies is also expected to cite examples of how the community’s psychological and therapeutic issues can be addressed effectively by those who adopt a sexually affirmative status and do not see sexual or gender variation as problems in any way.
GALHA Secretary Mike Rickwood commented “Some of our members experienced aversion therapy in the 1950s and 60s and they know from personal experience the damage that such approaches can cause. Our members have expressed great concern about pseudo therapeutic groups and cults and their work in this area. Parents of gay people have contacted us to express concern about the impact of such evangelical projects such as the UK Alpha Course. We also need to consider the devastating psychological consequences on vulnerable members of our community that can be caused by the anti gay statements made by religious leadersâ€.Â
The GALHA meeting, “Pink Therapy will take place from 7.30pm on Friday 14th January at Conway Hall, Red Lion Square, Holborn, London.
Admission is free and all are welcome.
