Green Leader Supports GALHA
KENILWORTH, 26 JANUARY 2002 — The Gay and Lesbian Humanist Association (GALHA) has warmly welcomed the support of the openly gay leader of the UK Green Party, Darren Johnson.
Johnson, who is also leader of the Green Group on the London Assembly, joined GALHA after speaking at its Lesbian and Gay Rights Forum held in London on 10 January. He has since accepted an invitation to join the group’s panel of Vice-Presidents, which includes Labour MP Tony Banks, Liberal Democrat MP Evan Harris, art historian and former Director of the National Gallery Sir Michael Levey, and writer and broadcaster Claire Rayner. The group’s President is the lesbian author Maureen Duffy.
Commenting on gaining the new member and Vice-President, GALHA Secretary George Broadhead said: “After getting the support of a prominent Labour and Liberal Democrat MP, it’s good to have the support of such a well-known figure in the Green Party, which has excellent policies concerning lesbian/gay and humanist rights. The invitation to Darren Johnson to become a Vice-President also reflects our humanist concern about environmental issues as well as humanitarian ones.”
