Mark Twain and Religion. Mark Twain is one of the most famous authors in the world but the views of his creator, Samuel L. Clemens, are less well known. Enjoy his biting satire and knockabout humour as well as his dark philosophical reflections in this talk by GALHA Chairperson Derek Lennard.

Saturday 23 June 2001, 12.30pm: Conway Hall
Humanist Buffet Lunch and Social. Organised by the British Humanist Association, the Gay and Lesbian Humanist Association, the National Secular Society, the Rationalist Press Association and the South Place Ethical Society. The cost is £10, which buys an excellent buffet lunch with a glass of wine or soft drinks, and coffee (but you can bring a bottle if you wish!). Walk for Life logo
Walk for Life 2001. Join celebrities and an expected 5,000 people on an easy 10km stroll alongside the River Thames in central London, organised by Crusaid, the leading national charity devoted to fundraising on behalf of people living with HIV and AIDS. Register via the Crusaid website.

Friday 8 June 2001, 7.30pm: Conway Hall
2001 Lesbian and Gay Census. Sandy Ashton and David Pinson of ID Research present the findings of this major piece of research into lesbian and gay lives in the 21st century. What does it tell us and does it really matter? We will be inviting campaigners from the 1950s and 1960s to reflect on changes since those decades.

Friday 18 and Saturday 19 May 2001, 7.30pm: Hove
The Time To Be Happy. Derek Lennard’s acclaimed dramatisation of the life and work of the famous American orator Robert G. Ingersoll is performed as part of the Brighton Festival. A further chance to see this entertainment whose premiere performance took place last year at Conway Hall. Details of this latest performance are given on a separate page.

Alan Turing. Andrew Hodges, the internationally renowned biographer of Alan Turing, talks about the life and work of the gay atheist mathematician whose code-breaking genius had a significant impact on the outcome of the Second World War. Friday 20 April 2001, 7.30pm: Conway Hall.
120 years of The Freethinker. Barry Duke, editor of the secular humanist monthly The Freethinker and a founder member of GALHA, looks back on the fascinating history of a magazine that has always been steeped in controversy: a thought-provoking social history which highlights historic battles of the day about such issues as blasphemy, birth control, censorship, sexuality and religion versus science.

Preview of the London Lesbian and Gay Film Festival. Brian Robinson of the British Film Institute gives us an exclusive preview of the highlights of the fifteenth London Lesbian and Gay Film Festival being held this year from 29 March to 12 April.

Friday 9 February 2001, 7.30pm: Conway Hall
The Quaker Lesbian and Gay Fellowship. Hugh Jones, Liaison Officer of the Quaker Lesbian and Gay Fellowship talks about the work of QLGF. What are the main differences between Quakers and Humanists? Can we work together around lesbian and gay rights and other human rights issues?

Friday 12 January 2001, 7.30pm: Conway Hall
Home of the brave and land of the free? A week before the new US President is sworn in, Carol Budd and Linda Wilkinson, founder members of Amnesty International UK’s Lesbian, Gay, Bisexual and Transgender Network, take a critical look at lesbian and gay rights in the United States. Linda, a novelist and playwright, will illustrate the talk with readings from American literature.

‘Any Questions?’, with a panel of speakers taking questions from the audience. The panel includes Linda Wilkinson, Jim Herrick and Terry Sanderson.

Friday 13 October 2000, 7.30pm: Conway Hall
On the centenary of the death of Oscar Wilde, film critic Mansel Stimpson talks about the way the dramatist has been portrayed in film. With video extracts.

GALHA Annual General Meeting, followed by a social with drinks and snacks provided.

Friday 8 to Monday 11 September 2000: Bath
GALHA’s Annual Weekend Gathering takes place in Bath, including a guided tour of the Roman Baths and Pump Room, dropping in on the Saturday morning social held by local gay group Gay West, a coach excursion, and a cabaret entertainment. All GALHA members and their guests are welcome. Advance booking is required. Contact GALHA for further information.
