AGM weekend in Newcastle
GALHA’s annual weekend conference and AGM:
Join us in the vibrant city of Newcastle for GALHA’s weekend conference and AGM, from Friday 4th to Monday 7th September 2009.
The AGM itself (for local members or those not staying at the group hotel) starts at 11am on the Sunday.
The group hotel for the weekend is the Vermont, right in the centre of the city near the river and the famous bridges. We have secured a great group rate of £52.50 per person per night for double occupancy (£105 per room) or £70 per night for single occupancy, which includes breakfast and a three course dinner. (The hotel’s published rates are £215.00 per room for double occupancy and £172.50 for single occupancy). An admin fee of £5 will be added to ensure GALHA’s costs are covered.
There are a wealth of things to see and do in Newcastle including the Baltic Arts Centre, the Sage Music Centre and the infamous nightlife. See Visit Newcastle.
We will be dining in a private function room on the Saturday evening, with the AGM on the Sunday morning.
Our weekend events are always popular, and if you’ve never been before then do join us this time. We’ll be in a great hotel in a fascinating city.
Bookings for accommodation are now closed.

Agenda for GALHA Conference – Newcastle 2009
These are the organised activities, with other details below:
Saturday 10.00am
Private walking tour of Newcastle: meet at hotel reception
Saturday 7.30pm - Dinner - The Earl Grey & Armstrong Suite
Saturday after dinner - Raffle.
Speech by Dr Matthew Waites.
Sunday 11.00am - AGM - The Earl Grey & Armstrong Suite
Notes
- Saturday at 10.00am: a GALHA-only guided walking tour of Newcastle city centre. The tour lasts around 2 hours with a coffee stop at 11. The tour will finish on the Quayside to view the Millennium bridge opening at 12. This also allows anyone who is interested to cross the Swing Bridge or Millennium Bridge to visit the Baltic and Sage. I expect most of us will want to do that. There are cafes in both venues.
- A charge of £5 will be collected to cover the fee for the guide (assuming most people join the walk).
- Dinner will be in a private function room on Saturday evening, and in the main restaurant on Friday and Sunday evening.
- For dinner on Friday and Sunday evening, we have to choose a timeslot when checking in to the hotel. I suggest we all choose 7.30 until it fills up, then 8.00.
- Dinner is available from 6.00 to 10.30. If you arrive later than 10.30 you can substitute room service instead of having dinner.
- On all nights some of us will be gathering in the hotel bar before dinner. Drinks are not included in the prepaid package.
- Dr Matthew Waites is a Lecturer in Sociology at the University of Glasgow.
- GALHA's AGM will start at 11.00am on Sunday, in the Earl Grey & Armstrong Suite. We’ll aim to get through procedural matters relatively quickly, to allow time for a discussion of the action plan for next year. Your input would be appreciated.
- There is no organised activity for Sunday afternoon, but some of the group are planning to visit Durham, by train.
Directions to hotel
On leaving the train station turn right and follow the main road, stay on footpath and road will bear right (do not go off into any side roads) stay on main footpath by main road, as the road unwinds you will see the castle, go towards the castle (under the viaduct) and the hotel is behind it. The walk should take approx 5 minutes.
