A Joe Orton walk through Islington, to be followed by a showing of Prick Up Your Ears at Conway Hall. Join us for an easy-going walking tour in North London, where we’ll be taken from present-day Islington back to the 1960s, when it was home to playwright Joe Orton. Our guide is local celebrity Peter Powell, who knew Joe and met him just days before his tragic death. We will then head to Conway Hall, to watch Prick Up Your Ears and enjoy a glass of wine. Peter Powell will be on hand after the film to answer any questions about Joe Orton and his life. Advance booking is essential (£5.00 per person; £4.00 concessions). Homophobia in Eastern Europe. A talk by Bill Schiller, co-founder of the International Lesbian and Gay Cultural Network, based on his extensive involvement in campaigns for lesbian and gay rights in the region. Why are churches encouraging their followers to break up gay rights demonstrations in countries such as Latvia? How can the gay rights movement be built in the face of such hostility? The meeting is part of the Belarus Moonbow in Exile festival (see below). |

Belarus Moonbow in Exile. A free public festival with writers, artists, documentary filmmakers, singers and poets, organised by the International Lesbian and Gay Cultural Network (ILGCN). Ian Stewart, ILGCN’s Secretary General for Literature, explains: “Hard-pressed lesbians and gay men in the former Soviet Republic of Belarus have asked us to hold a ‘Cultural Festival in Exile’ for them. Homosexual citizens of Belarus dream of the day when they’ll be able to hold their own public celebrations of lesbian and gay culture without armed militia storming their meetings, participants from abroad being turned back at the border, and death threats to organisers.” Activities from 11.00am to 3.00pm each day (11.00am to 6.00pm on Saturday), with follow-on events in different locations. The full schedule is available on the ILGCN website. |
